With fifty states spread from coast to coast and beyond, America offers some of the most diverse and unique cuisine in the world. But there's not just one thing that can be referred to as "American food" -- there's a whole array of cuisines across the country that make up our cuisine. And depending upon what part of the country you're in, that food may change.



For instance, if you visit Philadelphia, the food is cheesesteak. But if you go to the other side of the country and drop in on San Diego, you want fish tacos. In Boston, it's a bowl of clam chowder at a historic restaurant. Barbecue and pizza are also both very American but they can change depending on where you are: barbecue comes in different styles across the south and pizza is at the center of a debate involving Chicago and New York City -- who has the best?

Just because parents have really young children doesn't mean they can't go on vacation. These days there are lots of options to choose from, especially in cruise travel.



To make vacation planning easier for busy moms and dads, CruiseCompete.com recently came up with a list of baby-friendly cruise lines.

Well-known for being a family-friendly line, Disney Cruises is one of the best for infants. Their Flounder's Reef Nursery accepts children from as young as 12 weeks old. The counselor ratio is quite small (1:4 for infants), so you can relax and have fun knowing your baby is in safe hands. They have amenities to keep the kids busy, such as baby swings, walkers, books, toys, etc.

Royal Caribbean's "Royal Babies" program is designed for babies 6-18 months. These playgroups include activities like baby gymnastics and musical inspiration. On the newest ship, Oasis of the Seas, they also provide a full-staff nursery with day and night child watch options.

P&O Cruises also offers a comprehensive kids program. The Reef program (ages 2-4) is filled with activities and designed for young children. For more free time, parents can also use the cruise line's supervised night nursery.

Of course, when planning a cruise for the entire family, parents need to think about the baby's comfort level. It's not wise to pick a chilly destination like Alaska or Antarctica when you can go for warmer climates like the Caribbean or Hawaii. When booking your cabins, make sure there are enough amenties (cribs, mini-fridge, blankets) to keep the little ones happy.

If you're a parent-to-be, you know that having a child is one of the most exciting and stressful times of your life. The next few months are your last chance for some alone time with your mate.

If you plan to get some well-deserved R&R, TheBump.com editor Erin Van Vuuren has shared a few 'babymoon' tips to keep you safe and happy on your last big child-free getaway:

Choose your locale wisely
Enduring a layover or a 10-hour car ride is no way to start a relaxing trip. Make sure you choose a location that won't require too much effort. When researching locations, find out if they have access to quality medical facilities near the area (just in case!).

Travel during the 2nd Trimester
The second trimester should be the most comfortable time to travel. The nausea of the first trimester is hopefully a distant memory and you aren't as uncomfortable as you will be in a few weeks. According to the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, the safest time to travel is from 18 to 24 weeks.

Check Restrictions
If you're flying, check with the airline to make sure they'll let you on the plane! Most physicians say it's safe to fly up to 36 weeks, but airlines have varying restrictions, including different policies for domestic and international travel. Cruise lines have restrictions too - Royal Caribbean won't allow you to travel when you enter your 27th week, Celebrity Cruise Lines only allows those less than 26 weeks, and Princess Cruises sets their limit at 24 weeks.

Blue Cross RiverRink

Blue Cross RiverRink is Philadelphia's only outdoor public ice rink. The rink opens the day after Thanksgiving and attracts nearly a quarter million ice skaters throughout the season. Each month, the rink hosts a free event including the always-popular "Skate with Santa" and the "New Year's Eve Party on Ice."

Downtown on Ice
Los Angeles, Calif.
L.A.'s answer to New York's Rockefeller Center, Downtown on Ice is Southern California's largest outdoor skating rink located smack dab in the center of downtown Los Angeles. Palm trees surrounding the rink will make you feel an ice queen in paradise. The rink often hosts free concerts and occasional hockey clinics run by the L.A. Kings.

The Depot Skating Rink
Minneapolis, Minn.
Named one of the top ten best places in the country to ice skate by USA Today and MSNBC, The Depot Rink is located inside a stunning historic train shed. Floor-to-ceiling windows provide beautiful views of the city skyline. You'll be shielded from Minneapolis' biting cold winter, but practically feel like you're skating outdoors.

Boston Common Frog Pond
Boston, Mass.
Take your skates for a spin at the Frog Pond, situated in America's oldest public park. Afterwards, warm up with a cozy lunch or dinner at some of Boston's best restaurants. And if you can't wait until after you skate, the kid-friendly menu at the rink's snack bar is overseen by local restaurant chefs.

McCormick Tribune Ice Rink at Millennium Park
Chicago, Ill.
Kick off winter in the Windy City at the McCormick Tribune Ice Rink. The rink is free and open to the public and draws more than 100,000 skaters each year. You'll enjoy great views of Michigan Avenue as you glide around the rink. The frosty fun begins November 18.

Touring wineries is a wonderful way to spend a lazy weekend afternoon. Not only will you discover local wines that please your palate, but you'll also learn how to swirl and sniff like a pro.

Bella Vista Cellars is reminiscent of a true Tuscan winery. Italian varieties are a specialty as is their famous blackberry wine. If you're bored with the normal summer vacations this year, try something different -- really different. A house in Wisconsin and a castle in Colorado offer two very unique attractions that might appeal to the oddball in you.



The house was the brainchild of an obsessed architect who got revenge in a very odd way. The castle was simply the result of a man aiming to accomplish something -- something really big. Either way, both buildings give a little insight into the lives of two very unusual men. So it might be worth a trip.

House on the Rock
Spring Green, Wisconsin
An aspiring architect named Alex Jordan, Jr. drove to Taliesin, the summer home of Frank Lloyd Wright to show him plans for a building in Madison, Wis. Jordan admired Wright and sought after his approval. After looking at the plans, Wright said, "I wouldn't hire you to design a cheese crate or a chicken coop. You're not capable."

To prove him wrong Jordon decided to build a Japanese-style house on a pinnacle of rocks and called it House on the Rock. What started as constructive vendetta turned into one of the most admired homes in Wisconsin, with a half-million visitors a year.

The house itself has been added to over the years, transforming into a large complex. Visitors are also welcomed at the nearby House on the Rock Inn and Resort, where you can rest or play golf course after touring the unique home.

Rooms host several unique exhibitions, including The Streets of Yesterday, a recreation of a turn-of-the-century town, The Heritage of the Sea, including a 200-foot sea creature and nautical-themed artifacts and The Music of Yesterday, housing a collection of mechanical music machines, a mechanical band and the world's largest indoor carousel with 239 riding animals. The Infinity Room juts out 218 feet from the rock with no supports and features 3,000 windows. Take that, Wright.

Bishop Castle
Beulah, Colorado
Since 1969, Jim Bishop has been working on a castle -- by himself. In fact, he doesn't want help. He wants to do it alone in order to make "America's biggest, one-man, physical project." To date, over 1000 tons of rock have been used to build Bishop Castle in San Isabel National Forest, Colo.

He certainly achieved some record but he's still going. At 65, he has plans to add to the current castle and even build a second castle for his wife.

Today, the castle features some unique ornamentation. A metal dragon made from recycled hospital trays sticks out from the top of the structure and shoots fire via a hot air balloon burner. The castle's fire place uses the dragon's nose as a chimney. Stained glass adorns a giant entry way. The giant towers are connected by ornamental iron walkways.

Bishop does not use a blueprint but he's continuously adding to the place. Visitors are welcome and admission is free but donations are accepted. You must sign the guest book to get in as a waiver in case of an accident since Bishop has no insurance.

Just because snow season is long gone doesn't mean you can't have fun at your local ski resort town.

You can still enjoy the majestic beauty of these mountains during the longer days of the ear.

There's something for everyone, from outdoor sports to dinners and more:

Mt. Bachelor is the jewel of Oregon's High Desert. It is the perfect location to enjoy a summer hike, or to play some disc golf. Their Sunset Dinners are quite beautiful: feast on gourmet cuisine as the sun melts over Broken Top and the Sisters peaks. A moonlit chairlift ride back down to the base area ends a romantic evening.

Montana's Big Sky Resort offers a brand new Zip Line, whitewater rafting, fly fishing and horseback riding as some of the many activities to keep you busy. It's also a short drive from the West Entrance of Yellowstone National Park.

One of the top ski resorts, Snowbird in Utah has a bungy trampoline attraction, aerial tram rides, alpine slide, climbing walls and much more. They also have 882 lodging rooms, making your stay comfortable and convenient.

Located in the picturesque Green Mountain National Forest, Vermont's Mountain Top Inn & Resort has mountain biking packages, scenic pontoon boat rides, claybird shooting (lessons offered) and tennis. Book a spa treatment and soak up the breathtaking beauty of nature in this green wonderland.

Attitash in New Hampshire has a cool Water Park. Ride the Sidewinder rapids, or shoot down the Aquaboggan. For the little ones, Buddy Bear's Playpool is a great option. You probably know about the Washington Monument in D.C. But maybe you don't know about a few of the other monuments in the country.

Two monuments, one in Texas and one in Kentucky, tower over the neighboring countryside. The San Jacinto Monument commemorates those who died in battle during the Texas Revolution. Texas became a republic in 1836 and was later annexed by the United States.

The Jefferson Davis Monument is a memorial to the president of the Confederate States of America. Although the Confederacy was defeated over 100 years ago, some visitors to this monument can't let go.

The San Jacinto Monument
San Jacinto was the site of the decisive battle of the Texas Revolution. 20 years after the battle, the Texas Veteran's Association lobbied for a memorial for those that died during the Texas Revolution. 83 years of lobbying and 103 years after the Battle of San Jacinto, this memorial was finally built in 1939. 103 years after a battle that took 18 minutes.

The San Jacinto Monument is located in Deer Park, Texas, about 20 miles outside of Houston. The federal government ordered the designer to keep the monument shorter than the Washington Monument in Washington, D.C. which stands a little over 555 feet. In compliance, this Texas monument was built only to 533 feet.

However, since everything is bigger in Texas, they cheated a bit and placed the Lone Star on top of the monument, making it 567 feet, 12 inches taller than Washington's. It is the world's tallest monumental column.

The Jefferson Davis Monument
While Kentucky was divided during the Civil War, it is also the birthplace of Jefferson Davis, the president of the Confederacy. A monument was built in the state, thanks to members of the Orphan Brigade, so named because Kentucky never seceded. Completed in 1924, it's the tallest, non-reinforced concrete structure in the world at 351 feet tall. It closed for five years for renovation, reopening in 2004.

Every year a pageants, like "Wee Miss Confederacy," "Little Miss Confederacy," "Junior Miss Confederacy," "Miss Confederacy" and "Ms. Confederacy," are held near the monument. According to the application, "judges will be looking for contestants that portray the typical Southern girl, lady or woman of the Antebellum Era."

You will not find "Stars and Bars" flying over the monument, since the Confederacy lost the war. You can however buy one in the gift shop.

Hot Springs, Ark. is known for its bath houses. The famous Bath House Row features eight beautiful buildings which have accommodated spas since the turn of the century. Two of them, The Buckstaff and The Quapaw, are still in operation. Taking a bath and a massage in one of these spots is a great way to rest the body.

The spas aren't the only things of interest in the hometown of Bill Clinton. It's easily one of the greatest tourist spots of the south, behind Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge, Tenn.

Here are some of the spots you can visit -- you might just see a merman:

Attractions
The Gangster Museum of America is the place you can go to see where the bad guys of the prohibition era relaxed. Lucky Luciano and Al Capone both had good business and good times in the area. The museum contains several galleries and the Felony Theater shows a documentary to visitors. Historians also give lectures on weekends. Don't forget to get a Gangster Museum T-shirt -- that's gangsta.

The Arkansas Alligator Farm and Petting Zoo is supposedly one of two places in the world displaying the body of a merman or a half-fish-half-man. Only you should decide if its real or not. Don't listen to naysayers who claim it's a taxidermy-ed hornswoggle because you'll be able to do that yourself.

The merman is in the gift shop so you'll be able to ogle that for free. But you will have to pay a fee to look at the plethora of gators out back. If you show up at the right time you can watch them feed on chicken thighs and if you're lucky, the staff will feed them in your midst because they like watching them eat as much as you do. The other animals including the monkeys and big cats look depressed.

Tiny town is a magical hole in the wall. It was built by one man out of various found items and contains hundreds of moving parts. The man is now deceased but back in his day, he would give tours of his masterpiece, pointing out sights visitors may have missed including a mechanical parade with Laverne and Shirley, Harry & Bess Truman and Mr. T.

If it's getting too hot for you, then head into a place that needs to stay cool: The Josephine Tussaud Wax Museum. You'll find some of the creepiest figures there, unanimated. Highlights are the "historically accurate" medieval torture scenes and the World of Make Believe.

Other Stuff To Do
If you like miniature golf then Funtrackers is the place to go. There's a volcano that spews a fireball 25 feet into the air. And you can also ride the go-karts, bumper boats or play at the an arcade.

If you need more extreme redneck fun then there's a place called Superlift ORV Park. ORV stands for Off Road Vehicles and includes five different levels of muddin' and climbing rocks with your 4-wheel-drive, ATV or motorcycle. Cost is $100 per night with a two night minimum.

Blow some steam at the On Target Indoor Firing Range. Rent a handgun or bring your own. You can even bring your automatic if you have one. On the last Sunday of every month, there is a Bulls-Eye Event where shooters can win a trophy -- that's better than a t-shirt.

Magical Entertainment
Hillbilly comedy used to be big in this town. Then, magic slowly took over. There used to be only one magic theater in Hot Springs. Now, there are three!

The Magic Lantern Theater hosts magician, Maxwell Blade. Guest magicians and mentalists sometimes show up as an added bonus. The new magician in town is Stonehenge. His magic can be seen at the Drake Theatre of Magic. To complete your magical trifecta, The Magic of Scott Davis Show can be seen at the Ray Lynn Theater.
