These days there are lots of options to choose from, especially in cruise travel.

To make vacation planning easier for busy moms and dads, CruiseCompete.com recently came up with a list of baby-friendly cruise lines.

Well-known for being a family-friendly line, Disney Cruises is one of the best for infants. Their Flounder's Reef Nursery accepts children from as young as 12 weeks old. The counselor ratio is quite small (1:4 for infants), so you can relax and have fun knowing your baby is in safe hands. They have amenities to keep the kids busy, such as baby swings, walkers, books, toys, etc.

Royal Caribbean's "Royal Babies" program is designed for babies 6-18 months. These playgroups include activities like baby gymnastics and musical inspiration. On the newest ship, Oasis of the Seas, they also provide a full-staff nursery with day and night child watch options.

P&O Cruises also offers a comprehensive kids program. The Reef program (ages 2-4) is filled with activities and designed for young children. For more free time, parents can also use the cruise line's supervised night nursery.

Of course, when planning a cruise for the entire family, parents need to think about the baby's comfort level. It's not wise to pick a chilly destination like Alaska or Antarctica when you can go for warmer climates like the Caribbean or Hawaii. When booking your cabins, make sure there are enough amenties (cribs, mini-fridge, blankets) to keep the little ones happy.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Coolest Ice-Skating Rinks in the Country

Filed under: Travel, Kid-Friendly Events, Winter Fun

With the winter season and the holidays fast approaching, it's about time to lace up those skates and embrace the cold-weather spirit.

Bundle up, grab your family and friends and get ready to skate your heart out. Here are some simple safety tips to help ensure your children have a safe and fun Halloween.

When selecting a costume, it's important to choose one that allows your child to see clearly. Instead of a mask, use face paint. It's also a good idea to pick out a bright-colored costume if your child will be trick-or-treating at night. This helps maximize visibility to motorists.

Encourage your child to walk on sidewalks and driveways and only visit houses where the lights are on. Younger children should always be accompanied by an adult and it's best to take the little goblins out earlier in the evening before the streets get too hectic.

If you feel your child is old enough to trick-or-treat without an adult, make sure you remind your child to stay with the group and set an agreed-upon time to be home. Instruct them to stick to familiar neighborhoods, avoid cutting across dark yards and never enter a stranger's home. It's a good idea to equip your child with a flashlight and a cell phone.

Now you may be wondering, how old is too old for trick-or-treating? Let's be frank here. Trick-or-treating adults are just plain creepy. Once you hit your late teens to early 20s, you'll probably start getting some strange looks, so it's best to enjoy the Halloween spirit in a different way. Instead of trick-or-treating, throw a costume party for you and your friends or check out a haunted house.

Planning to bring Fido along trick-or-treating? There are a few important safety tips for dogs as well. Bark Busters, the world's largest dog training company, says Halloween can be spooky and startling not just for you, but for your pup, too. In fact, Bark Busters trainers agree that they hear about more dogs dying or straying during Halloween than any other holiday.

If you do plan to take your dog trick-or-treating, be sure your dog's identification tags are secure and keep a firm grip on the leash. Also keep in mind that your dog may regard family members as strangers when dressed in costumes, so allow your dog to sniff the costumes before kids put them on.

Halloween candy can also pose a serious threat to your furry friend. Many candies, including those made with chocolate or the the artificial sweetener xylitol, are toxic to dogs. Children may try to share candy with the dog, so be sure they are informed of the dangers and told not to do so.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Apple Picking Guide: Harvest Tips, Recipes & Orchards Near You

Filed under: Kid-Friendly Events, Fall Activities

The month of October brings to mind pumpkins, gourds, ghosts and ghouls. But October also marks the continuation of National Apple Month, which according to the U.S. Apple Association, spans a three-month window from September to November to increase apple industry sales and enhance consumer awareness and usage of apples and apple products. Hot apple cider, apple butter or a slice of apple pie, anyone?

Going apple picking is a great fall activity, and apples are one of the easiest fruits to pick and use. They can be eaten fresh or be cooked, canned or frozen. Apples also have several health benefits. One apple is only about 80 calories and is loaded with fiber and antioxidants. After all, an apple a day keeps the doctor away.

Here's everything you need to know about picking your way to delicious, juicy apples, plus where to pick your own near you:

Picking & Storage Tips
Apples can vary in color depending on the variety, but always be sure to pick firm apples that are free of bruises. Ask the farmer which varieties are ripe and try to stick to those.

As you're picking your apples, place them gently into your basket or bucket. If you throw them, they will bruise and spoil more quickly. After picking, keep apples cool to preserve their shelf life. This can help keep them fresh for several weeks. Storing apples in a cool basement, especially if you've got more than you get fit in your fridge, tends to work well. Also, as with many fruits, don't wash your apples until you are ready to use them to prevent premature spoilage.

Pick-Your-Own Apple Orchards
One thing you'll notice when you set out to go apple picking is that you're headed for the country. A beautiful afternoon drive down winding country roads adds to the apple-picking experience.

On the East Coast, Masker Orchards is a great family-friendly orchard in New York's Hudson Valley region. As leisure time seems to become more and more precious in our busy lives, parents are looking for educational but fun places to bring their family. The best bet? A children's museum. Museums dedicated to kids provide all sorts of interactive family fun from exploring dinosaur fossils to starring in a TV show.

With more than 200 kids' museums across the country, we've uncovered our picks for the top 10:

1. The Boston Children's Museum
The Boston Children's Museum is all about teaching kids through direct experience. Recognized internationally as a pacesetter for children's exhibits and leading center for research and development, the museum has been building innovative exhibits for over 90 years. The emphasis is on hands-on learning which means no scolding the kids for touching something they shouldn't. Environmental awareness is also a significant focus at the museum.

2. Port Discovery Children's Museum
Let your kids make a splash at this Baltimore museum's newest permanent exhibit, "Wonders of Water." Kids can build a fountain, play in the stream table and learn about human interactions with water in fun and exciting ways. You will get wet, but the museum does provide slickers and crocs for everyone. Other museum attractions include a three-story treehouse and the HiFlyer hot air balloon which gives kids a 15-minute ride about the city's Inner Harbor.

3. The Children's Museum of Indianapolis
Dinosaurs are a big attraction at the world's largest kids' museum. The museum's $25 million, 8,000-square-foot "Dinosphere" Now You're in Their World" exhibit features a world-class collection of real dinosaur fossils. You'll also want to check out the museum's newest permanent exhibit "Take Me There: Egypt." Kids learn about modern Egyptian life while visiting a home, shopping at a marketplace or playing a part in a traditional Egyptian celebration.

4. Discovery Center Museum
Located in Rockford, Ill., this museum features the first outdoor science park in the country. In the "Robotics Lab," kids can design a Mars Rover or space station. Also check out the Kids News Studio where your child can conduct a live broadcast on a local CBS station.

5. The Children's Museum of Houston
A Victorian playhouse, an interactive TV studio and an outdoor eco-station are just some of the fun things at this Houston museum. Children love Kidropolis, a mini city where kids can run a business, go shopping in the all-new and revamped marketplace, and try out over two dozen different jobs.

6. Brooklyn Children's Museum
Established in 1899, this was the first museum created expressly for children. A recent expansion and all-new exhibits have reinvigorated the experience. In "Neighborhood Nature," kids can visit a freshwater pond, a saltwater beach, an urban woodland and a community garden. The museum is also home to an awe-inspiring collection of 30,000 objects from a shark's jawbone to musical instruments from around the world.

7. Strong National Museum of Play
This Rochester, New York museum is home to the National Toy Hall of Fame, the world's largest collection of toys, dolls and games. Healthier options are also more prevalent in family restaurants.

Here are some dining options with kid's menus:

Along with the usual mac and cheese and hot dogs, Left Bank in Larkspur, Calif. offers a chic menu of kid-sized grilled salmon and and an American style croque monsieur.

Mai Kai in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. features Bora Bora Beef, Society Island Shrimp, and Captain Cook's Ribs as some of their Polynesian entrees. Steamed rice or pork fried rice, beverage and dessert are included. Kids also get a coloring book, and there's also an evening children's show on Sundays.

The Four Seasons in Chicago has a healthy 'Tween' menu that includes low-fat choices such as tacos with lean ground beef or chicken, grilled chicken breast sandwich, and a turkey burger.

Every Sunday, kids dining at San Francisco's luella have their choice of chicken pot pie, fresh pasta with butter and parmesan and Margherita pizza. Sides of broccoli and cheese, fries, and mashed potatoes can also be ordered for another $2-4.

If Japanese Hibachi is more your kid's thing, Arirang Hibachi in New York's Staten Island has a kid's menu filled with different hibachi dishes (chicken, pork, steak, shrimp). This menu also comes with a shrimp appetizer, soup or salad, vegetables, rice, and ice cream.

GigglesnHugs in Los Angeles offers plenty of healthy options. Parents will be relieved to see organic eggs for breakfast and beet salad for lunch. They even offer a spinach puree as a pizza sauce.

Zoos all over the country this year are hosting Easter events, including the ever-popular egg hunts but there's more: games, crafts and entertainment. Your little one is sure to enjoy their time at the zoo.

Zoos are also celebrating Earth Day and they're doing their best to pull together programs that will really teach your kids about the importance of the planet. Check out just a few of the highlights.
The Los Angeles Zoo & Botanical Gardens will host their own bunny at the Big Bunny's Spring Fling April 10, 11 and 12. Live bunnies will bounce through the egg patch at the zoo as children make their own bunny ears, meet "Big Bunny" and have their faces painted. The fun starts at 10 am each morning and runs until 4 pm.

Miami's Metro Zoo holds their Egg Safari on April 11 & 12. Not only will the kids be able to hunt from eggs from 11 am to 4 pm both days, they'll also be able to see the animals participate in their own egg hunts. After they're tuckered out from hunting eggs, the Easter Bunny will be waiting to have his picture taken with your little one. This fun egg hunt is included with the price of zoo admission.

The Smithsonian National Zoo celebrates the African American family on Easter Monday, April 13 with egg hunts, egg rolls and the Create-a-Critter craft project in front of Lemur Island. Kids will also have the opportunity to meet the Easter Bunny and enjoy entertainment from dance troupes and storytellers. The whole family is welcome and admission is free.

Many other zoos are celebrating Earth Day in a big way. For instance, the Bronx Zoo will be celebrating all through Earth Month. The zoo's 2009 Earth Expo runs April 4 through 19 and April 25 & 26. Families will be able to learn about eco-friendly foods and lifestyles while enjoying entertainment that's also Earth friendly. Meanwhile, the San Francisco Zoo is throwing a party for the planet on April 18. Bay area families will be treated to tips on green living, eco-friendly scavenger hunt, "green-themed" music and a puppet show.

Check with your local zoo to find out about their upcoming events. Search for your nearest zoo.

Ohio's only Ice Cream Museum is located in the park along with a gift shop and a visitor's center.

Even after the celebration is over, the Olde Mill will be having fun all summer long with free entertainment every weekend, featuring barber shop quartets and magic shows. Bring the kids and enjoy a great time.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
